Installation instructions for self-adhesive window frame film
Apply your new films to your old window frames in just a few steps and with simple tools, without having to remove them. This means that even private individuals can easily install the film themselves.
You will need the following tools to prepare the window frames and apply the film:
- Carpet knife
- Film remover if your old frames are covered with film
- Hot air dryer
- Felt squeegee
- Sandpaper - with a grain size of 120, 220 or 400, depending on the surface
- Antistatic PVC and film cleaner (included in our care set )
- Paint stick in the right colour

How to proceed step by step

Match the film and colour
Check in advance which film or decor you like best - or, if you are repairing small sections of the old window frame film, which colour, look and feel best matches the existing film.
If it is not clear from your product data sheets which film was used on your old window frames, you can order film fans from RENOLIT and Continental in our shop or request up to three samples free of charge. If you notice slight colour deviations due to production tolerances or weathering, we recommend laminating larger areas.
Make preparations
Use the film remover to completely remove old film or detached sections from your window frames. If you are only repairing certain areas, then smooth the transitions from the remaining film to the window frame with sandpaper.
If you are unable to remove the film completely, sand the relevant areas. The old film must be completely removed to avoid even the smallest air pockets during subsequent bonding.
With unfoiled window frames, you can skip this step and continue directly with cleaning.
Clean the window frame
The surface to be bonded must be clean and free of dirt such as oil, dust, release agents or surfactants. Therefore, clean the frame thoroughly with an antistatic plastic cleaner - this is included in our care set.
Cutting the film
As a general rule, the narrower or smaller the film cut, the easier it is to process. For this reason, we offer the film on small, handy rolls. If the area to be laminated is even narrower, cut the film roughly to size before applying it. As a rule, the film should be around 2 cm wider than the laminating surface, as the edges are only cut flush after application.
Apply the film
Heat the surface to be bonded to approx. 30 °C to 40 °C using a hot air dryer before applying the film.
Then remove the self-adhesive film piece by piece from the back and bend it. Now use a felt squeegee to press the film onto the window frame. Make sure that there are no air pockets under the film, as these would cause bubbles when heated in the next step. As the adhesive strength of the adhesive is initially low, the film can be peeled off again in places and pressed on again if you need to touch it up.
Rework edges and corners
Heat the film with a hot air dryer, fold over the edges and press them down with the squeegee, making sure there are no air bubbles. Only then cut off the excess film with the carpet knife.
To rework corner details, also heat the film in the relevant areas and work out the details using the squeegee and carpet knife.
Information on correct storage and processing of the film
Please note that you should store the self-adhesive film at room temperature and a humidity of 50 % to 70 %. To ensure optimum application and proper hold, the films should be processed within four months of delivery.
The ideal processing temperature is between 18 °C and 45 °C. At lower temperatures, the adhesive hardens and the adhesive strength decreases, which can significantly affect the result and the lasting hold. If the film is applied correctly, the final adhesive strength is achieved after approx. 24 hours.
